72%

72% are a noise rock 3 piece from Northampton consisting of Joel Harries, Josh Ryan and Joe Brown.

They got together around 18 odd years ago with the intention of making joyfully, ugly music. After a handful of EPs and albums, 72% made How Is This Going To Make It Any Better, which took them in a distinctly darker direction, partly due to Wayne Adams’ production at Bear Bites Horse studios – there was still joy to be had, but a creeping menace added a more savoury flavour.

Their follow up “I’m Not Happy and That’s On You Three” is perhaps their densest record to date. Produced by the band and recorded at Joel Harries’s studio the album builds on the darker tone of its predecessor but with a new found depth and intensity. The guitars are mutated beyond recognition, disconcerting grooves skitter around beside them before coalescing into heavy bludgeoning unison passages. Both singles featured vocals in a more prominent way than previous releases, with KEN Mode’s Jesse Matthewson lending his voice to the furious rhythms of “First Time I’ve Felt Anything For A While”. Overall the album shows a band intent upon invention and experimentation while maintaining the spirit that it was founded upon.
